Spelling concepts covered in Term 1:

Text Types

 

Spelling:

Preassessment: students to record percent of correct words in journal writing samples. (count 100 words and count correctly spelt words make into a percentage.) Student interviews.

Grammar

Term focus is on poetry/colour and then expositions/ feral animals, introduced species.

Vowels and consonants/ begin spelling journals.
Students to colour and decorate own names so these can be glued onto the spelling assessment folders (half an A4 manila folder) with assessment sheet insert. Make covers for their spelling journals.

 

Look through previous writing samples and list misspelt words. Observe vowels and consonants. rewrite the words using one colour for vowels and another for consonants (I.T : type the words using different fonts). Samples to go on display.



Text types: book sort.

Students to sort the class books into piles.

  • books to go back to the library
  • fun and easy
  • pretty challenging

Students to consider sub-groups particularly in fact and fiction.....ie books about animals, people, happy things, sad things, narrative, explanation, information reports, biographies, authors.

Generate word lists to do with colour. Make big posters add colour and words related to the colour. Whole class student to moving to several posters of own choice. ensure nouns, adjectives and verbs are included, when demonstrating to the whole class. Later these posters can be used for writing poetry and researching word types and as a spelling resource.

Syllables: Every syllable has a vowel in it.

Teacher to add to the student word list according to student needs. Student to pick up to 5 words to learn this week.

Students to sort words according to syllables. ie 1 syllable, 2 syllables 3 syllables and so on. Practice in the spelling journal and assess each other.

 

 

Haiku poem. 3 lines containing 17 syllables
rhyme not necessary.

  • line 1: 5 syllables / a phrase to describe the object observed can include adjectives/alliteration

  • line 2: 7 syllables / a phrase describing the action of the object

  • line 3 : 5 syllables / something significant ie a tiny detail, thoughts about it

Dictionary Skills and beginnings sounds

word sort into beginning sounds and display in the classroom ie bl, pr, sn, gr etc to replace/ add to the a,b,c word wall.
