The ACT Government has commenced a $2.85 million maintenance drive to repair and upgrade Canberra's cycle paths and footpaths, Chief Minister and Minister for Transport, Jon Stanhope, announced today.
"The Government is currently repairing nearly 50 kilometres of cycle paths and footpaths in 27 suburbs," Mr Stanhope said.
"With work expected to be completed in January, the repairs will significantly improve the standard and safety of our paths to encourage more Canberrans to cycle or walk and to leave their car at home.
"Areas were prioritised for repairs through an inspection program and from reports of potential hazards to Canberra Connect by the community.
"The work is part of a$16.3 million boost for cycle paths, path signs and footpaths over this term - the single largest investment since self-government."
Mr Stanhope said the Government was committed to a rolling program of investments in the ACT's extensive cycle and footpath network.
"Since 2001, the Government has delivered more than 700km of paths and on-road cycle lanes," Mr Stanhope said.
"We have delivered the Dickson to Woden and Adelaide Avenue cycle paths, the world-class Stromlo Park cycle facilities and undertaken more than $24 million worth of repairs to extend the life of our existing paths.
"This work represents a record $46 million investment in creating a more cycle-friendly city, reducing congestion and encouraging more sustainable transport options."
The repairs will be carried out Acton, Barton, Belconnen, Bruce, Calwell, Chifley, Curtin, Deakin, Gilmore, Gordon, Greenway, Holt, Isaacs, Isabella Plains, Kaleen, Kambah, Latham, Lyons, Mawson, Monash, O'Connor, Richardson, Torrens, Turner, Wanniassa, Waramanga and Yarralumla.
Barriers and diversion signs will be erected to alert people to the works. To find out more call Canberra Connect on 1322 81.
