News and Views from ROAR - December 2001President's ReportAbout 20 members enjoyed a sunny summer evening BBQ in the pleasant surroundings of Lennox Gardens earlier this month. The kind weather was a stark contrast to the drenching we received at the February club BBQ. This year's hazards were biological, rather than meteorological, with swarming bush flies, cheeky sea gulls and the occasional imperious raven, all enjoying the food with us. Thanks to our cooks, Mick Garrett, Graham Thompson and Andrew Davies, who organised the meat. Last month's club meeting was at The Battery Factory in Fyshwick. Although I was unable to attend, I hear that the night was a raging success, with members virtually having to be chased out the door to bring proceedings to a close. Our thanks to manager, Robert Buettner, for inviting the club to his premises. My absence from the November meeting was occasioned by yet another visit to the land of the long white sheep, aka New Zealand. Mixing business with pleasure, and accompanied by family members (Sue and Geoff), we toured the North Island on a Qantas Holiday package for a week. While I attended a geological conference for a few days, Sue and Geoff visited Waitomo Caves (where the glow worms are), and sulphurous-smelling Rotorua. Together, we visited Auckland, Taupo, Mt Ruapehu and Wellington. A busy week, but very enjoyable. The package included a hire car, motel accommodation and air fares from Sydney. However, we were somewhat dismayed to land at Auckland airport to discover that our rental car for the week was a Ford Ka, a tiny little 3 door hatch with a boot too small to hold even a standard size suit case, never mind luggage for 3 people! The Hertz people were very good though, and immediately substituted an older, but bigger, 5 door Ford Festiva, which we were able to fit into much more comfortably. As usual, Pug-spotting was the name of the game while driving in NZ. Unsurprisingly, the most common models on the road were the 405 and 306. However, I did see two models which were never sold here - the UK assembled 309, and the gorgeous little 106. I was never a fan of the 309, but it's a shame we have not seen the 106 in Australia. Our first club activity in 2002 will be participation in the annual Wheels exhibition at EPIC in early February. This is great event, featuring displays by all the car clubs in Canberra and Queanbeyan area, and I thoroughly recommend it to you. Admission is free to all participants whose cars are on display. I wish all members a safe and enjoyable Christmas break, and look forward to seeing you in the New Year. While the coffee grinders are currently unavailable, 'House' in Woden Plaza and Belconnen Mall will be able to supply you with quality Peugeot salt, pepper and nutmeg grinders.
