President's Report

Some thirty or so members enjoyed the May club meeting in the showroom at Melrose Peugeot. Our thanks to Brad, Steve and Phil for hosting us on the night, including refreshments, and a terrific selection of Pugs for our inspection. Lucky door prizes of Peugeot merchandise also went to several members.

The gates of Melrose Peugeot are open by 8 a.m. on most mornings that I drive past, so for the staff to stay on until 8.30 p.m. is a real compliment to both them, and the club. Brad has also told me that Melrose will be sending a contingent of cars to the annual French Car day on Sunday 15 July.

Speaking of last month's meeting. Two nights beforehand, I had a cheery phone call from the irrepressible Andy Russo. "I'm terribly sorry, Brad", he said, "I won't be able to come to the meeting. I've had a heart attack, I'm in hospital, and I don't think they will let me out!" Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Andy.

The left rear tyre (Michelin, of course) on my 505 had been losing several pounds of pressure each week for a few months. One recent Saturday morning, thinking it might be a poor seal on the rim, I stopped off at Woden Tyre & Exhaust in Phillip, and asked them to investigate. I went off to do some shopping, and half an hour later they had the answer and the solution - not the rim at all, but a well-embedded nail which was duly removed and the hole plugged. With a Michelin Man out the front of WT & E, I couldn't help asking if they would like to give the club a talk on Michelin tyres. Dennis Backhouse, the manager wasn't there at the time, but I left a club magazine behind and a promise to ring him the next Monday.

The upshot is that our June club meeting at the Italo-Australian Club will feature a talk on Michelin tyres by Dennis Backhouse from Woden Tyre & Exhaust. WT & E are authorised Michelin dealers, but even Dennis admits to Michelin being a bit secretive about some of their activities. Who knows what secrets will be revealed? Come along and find out!

The Club was saddened to hear of the death of Terry Nicholls, secretary of the Canberra Renault Club earlier this month. Terry suffered a massive heart attack while playing hockey and died some days later. He was 56. Terry had a long involvement with Renaults, Peugeots and Citroens and was a winner of the Lew Edwards Memorial Award for his fine restoration of a Renault 16TS. We extend our sympathy to his family.

ON a lighter note, it was good to see the qualities of the 404 recognised in the Sunday Canberra Times over the past few weeks. First there was the editor's own 404, and then a piece on Citroen 2CV owner Ian Gamble, who rated the 404 the finest ever production car. We cannot help but agree with these sentiments.

FORMER Canberra Raiders player David Furner in Guardian is doing it tough in the car department while playing for Wigan in the UK Super League. He drives a sponsor's Peugeot while his 1966 Ford Mustang Fastback is stored in Canberra. He spent two off seasons doing up the pony car and can't bear to part with it, not even when he had the local muscle of an HSV Senator. (from The Pugilist).
