News and Views from ROAR - June 2006

President's Report

Early in June I flew to Europe for a week-long conference near Graz in eastern Austria. Ever the optimist, I dressed in shorts on a chilly Canberra morning, expecting that 30 hours later I would be enjoying summer in the Northern Hemisphere. Alas, while most of the rest of Europe seemed to be enjoying summer temperatures, someone forgot to turn the heater up in Graz. The upshot was that the weather was much the same as the Canberra weather I left behind. Undaunted I returned to Canberra, still wearing shorts, only to be greeted by sleet and biting southerly winds. Austria seemed quite tropical, in retrospect. Not surprisingly, German cars dominate the roads in Austria, although Pugs are fairly common too. Needless to say, I enjoyed seeing models that never made it to Oz - the pretty 206SW and the nifty 1007, for example.

Meanwhile back in wintery Canberra, club activities are proceeding apace. On Sunday 25th June, the annual Battle of Waterloo event will be held on the western lawns of Old Parliament House (opposite Questacon) from 10 am to 3 pm. Intending participants should arrive around 9 am to prepare the French battle lines. Napoleonic period costume and military hardware are most welcome to enhance the French display. However, all French cars and their owners are welcome, regardless of dress. A few days after the BOW we will hold our monthly club meeting at the Italo-Australian Club, when Colin Handley will tell tall tales and true from his participation in the recent Ampol Trial. Note that the meeting will be at 8 pm on THURSDAY the 29th, not the usual Tuesday timeslot.

The annual Bastille Day dinner will be held from 7.30 pm on Friday 14 July, at Zaraz Restaurant, 33 Mort Street Braddon. Cost will be $50 per person for a three course meal plus tea and coffee. There will be a choice of 4 mains and 3 desserts, and the entrees will be a mixed selection. Seats are strictly limited, and bookings should be made with Rick Phillips (Home phone 6292 5524) or John Phillips (mobile 0418 434601) by Friday 7th July at the absolute latest. Zaraz is licenced/BYO, so club members can choose whether they bring their own wine or buy at the bar. Special dietary needs can be catered for on request (tell Rick or John when you book). As usual we have extended an invitation to members of the Renault and Citroen clubs, so it should be a good froggy night.

Keep on pugging,

Brad Pillans
