News and Views from ROAR - June 2008

President's Report

GREETINGS ALL,

Once again, club members enjoyed a fine sunny day on the lawns of Old Parliament house for the annual Battle of Waterloo event held on Sunday 15 June. Furthermore, I am pleased to report that the 52 French cars, led by 30 Peugeots (and one Peugeot push bike), completely overwhelmed the 34 British cars on the day. Napoleon was there, of course, to take command of the French forces, which included not only Pugs, but Citroens, Renaults and a wonderful yellow Amilcar, aptly nicknamed the "Banana Boat". They say that an army marches on its stomach, and this proved to be the case, with our club BBQ team providing a steady stream of sausage sandwiches, as well as egg and bacon rolls, until supplies ran out. My thanks to Rick and Ros Phillips, and Neil Sperring, for organizing and selling the food, from which we made a healthy profit that will subsidise the Bastille Day dinner to be held at the Hotel Kurrajong on Saturday 12 July. Rick Phillips and John Bower both won $50 fuel vouchers in the BOW raffle, which was sponsored by Shannons and proceedings ended with a ritual Wellington boot throwing competition to celebrate the overwhelming French victory. For the record, Simon Anderson won the competition with a throw of 24 metres. All in all, it was an excellent day, with a steady stream of spectators admiring the well- prepared cars on both sides of the battlefield.

Ian Crawford, Motoring Editor for the Canberra Times, gave the event some good publicity with a story in the motoring section of the CT on Friday the 13th, which almost certainly boosted public interest.

Last month the club meeting was held at the New Works Art Gallery in Colbee Court, Phillip, hosted by John and Rick Phillips. With drinks and nibbles in hand, we enjoyed an interesting mix of landscape paintings and motor-vehicle photographs, the latter featuring striking close-ups of rusting panels and car badges that could well have been taken in what used to be known as Flynn's car wreckers in Cooma.

Our next club meeting will be held at the Canberra Services Club, in Manuka, at 8 pm on Tuesday 24 June. Why not come along to catch up with friends, hear the latest Pug gossip and read the magazines received from other clubs?
